BOOKBINDING FOR BEGINNERS – SPRING 2013

Due to our October Bookbinding for Beginners course having filled up so quickly we are running another course in February. Course details are below.

A nine week course in hand bookbinding. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic bookbinding techniques through a variety of historical and contemporary styles, and to use conventional and unconventional binding materials. There will also be a chance to develop a personal project in the latter stages. The course will be for a maximum of 8 students and will be run by Ina Baumeister at Book Works Studio.

Timetable

Week 1: Introduction to the course with examples of the type of work that could be produced over the 9 weeks.
Demonstration of different tools and types of material.
Two types of single-section pamphlet binding: wrappered softback.

Week 2. Multi-section case binding, Part I. Folding, sewing and spine lining.

Week 3. Multi-section case binding, Part II. Case making and attaching case to book block.

Week 4. Exposed spine structure, Part I.

Week 5. Exposed spine structure, Part II.

Week 6. Japanese style binding. Soft covers with stab stitching.

Week 7. Slipcase designed to hold the books made from the course.

Week 8. Personal project, Part I.

Week 9. Personal project, Part II.
