small Gold Medal
by Elizabeth Price (2001)

With this book, Elizabeth Price undertakes to fulfill this clause for one last time, though not faithfully. Six artists collaborate with Price in this task to proxy for the schoolboys by each contributing an essay in response to the Will.

small Gold Medal includes Dave Beech's critique of cultural paternalism; Nathan Coley's relocations of the titles of pastoral paintings from the collection to suburbia; Richard Hogg's imagined reinstatement of the Bequest in its original gallery space; Fergal Stapleton's hallucinatory reading of the seventeenth century painting, Numerous Animals with Orpheus; Simon Starling’s conflation of four narratives including those of children’s book Flat Stanley and Julius Caesar along with Matthew Thompson's conversations with two schoolboys who are his namesake.
